What is CBD and How is it Used?

If you find yourself asking what is CBD, and how is it used you are not alone.  As of late, CBD has been getting a lot of notoriety for its healing benefits, and as a product that is exceptionally high in demand.

A cannabis plant contains more than 100 naturally occurring, active compounds called cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of these compounds found in the hemp plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well-known cannabinoid found in cannabis however, unlike THC, CBD does not cause a “high” effect and can offer relief and other health benefits.

What do we know about CBD?

CBD is typically extracted from the flower of the industrial hemp plant which differs from a cannabis plant grown specifically for medical marijuana because it contains very little THC (less than .3%).  Hemp seeds and stalks from the industrial hemp plant are also harvested for their use as fibers and seed for propagation and hemp seed oils.

Hemp has had a long-standing relationship with humanity, and also receives a lot of negative connotations from its marijuana counterpart.  However, modern science reveals that hemp contains all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary for human life, as well as a rare protein known as globule edestins that is very similar to the globulin found in human blood plasma.

About Our CBD Products

Our focus is on purity and nutrient strength, and we achieve this with cutting edge extraction technologies and adhering to strict processing conditions.

Locally Sourced

Only North American hemp grown using only 100% organic farming practices are used to make our CBD products.  All hemp is tested for pesticides, VOC, and THC.

Full Spectrum

Full spectrum means that a hemp extract contains all the cannabinoids that are naturally occurring in the cannabis plant and not isolated to CBD only.

Extraction Methods

Ethanol Extraction

While ethanol can be used for extracting the full-range of cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant for CBD, even organic pharmaceutical-grade ethanol has drawbacks. First, ethanol is a polar solvent. This means that it will readily mix with water and dissolve water-soluble molecules. With an ethanol extraction it is still possible to use temperature & time to target specific compounds, but the range is very broad, and you will still get a lot of other terpenes, waxes and chlorophyll with your target compound.

The Rick Simpson method, utilizes a hydrocarbon such as butane, pentane, propane, hexane or acetone to extract CBD oil from cannabis. With a low boiling point, hydrocarbons like butane can easily be purged at the end of the extraction process, resulting in a pure byproduct of CBD oil.

While this method is cheap and relatively easy, it is also extremely dangerous and can result in explosions or fires. During the process there are open fumes susceptible to nearby flames.

It can also lead to products with a lower concentration of terpenes and other cannabinoids such as CBD.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction

We at Health and Wellness use Supercritical CO2 Extraction Methods for Various Reasons

The Top Ten Benefits of Supercritical CO2 Extraction

1. Single-step extraction is tailored to achieve highly concentrated products.

2. Extracts and spent biomass are free of solvent residues.

3. Mild operating temperature ensures product stability and quality.

4. Supercritical CO2 is universally accepted as a "friendly" and fully recyclable solvent.

5. Product recovery is accomplished via a simple pressure reduction.

6. Hazardous solvent wastes are eliminated.

7. Compounds in a complex mixture can be selectively separated using the pressure-dependent dissolving power of supercritical fluids.

8. Supercritical fluids can penetrate and extract from micro-porous substrates because of gas-like diffusion properties and the absence of surface tension limitations.

9. Lower operating costs are often realized because compression energy is more efficient than distillation energy.

10. Large scale supercritical fluid extraction of low price, commodity items such as coffee, tea, and saw palmetto indicates that supercritical CO2 processing can compete economically with traditional extraction and separation processes.
